El Cabo Site

🦕  A Window Into a Lost Herd

The El Cabo site is one of the most intriguing fossil localities within Montana’s Two Medicine Formation. It represents a bone‑bed style mass‑mortality deposit, preserving the remains of multiple juvenile Hypacrosaurus, a hollow‑crested duck‑billed dinosaur known from this region of Montana.

From 2021 - 2024 we spent the seasons excavating and recovering Juvenile Hypacrosaurus from this site and have found a number of unique qualities within this site such as:

  • The fossils show partial articulation, meaning bones were still connected when buried — a strong indicator of rapid burial after death . We found a complete arm humorous, ulna and radius in situe as well as femurs that were crossed over each other in place.
  •  The remains are very rarely distorted in this site however most fossils are found distorted or compressed by millions of years of geologic pressure, a hallmark of the Two Medicine Formation’s tectonic history but these bones are extremely dense and well preserved.
  • Some of the fossils recovered show unique pathological signs, like bones that were damaged or broken but healed before animal died as was fossilized.

El Cabo is still an active excavation, with new material continuing to emerge from the bone bed each season. The site’s density, preservation, and age make it one of the most exciting Hypacrosaurus localities currently being worked in Montana.

Due to the scientific importance and limited availability of El Cabo site material, we ask that only serious buyers contact us for purchase information.

Hypacrosaurus Fossils in the Matrix

You can see how these fossils were somewhat articulated in the matrix as we carefully dug around them to expose them in the natural state of preservation.

Closer Video of the Hypacrosaurus Fossils

These fossils were distorted from millions of years of pressure caused by the Earths tectonic plates slowly moving and shifting.
